About the role

The Associate Art Director is responsiblefor leading the creative efforts stacked against supporting the majority ofon-figure studio outfitting shots as well as elevated product laydowns. This position will deliver casting and artdirection that supports the strategy brief and results in compelling,brand-right photography for outfitting and laydown shots in the studio.

The Associate Art Director will partnerclosely with the Design & Concepting and Production teams to understand theproduct and storyline and help bring the concept to life visually.

This position works closely with the photo/videoproduction team to concept and identify the right talent needed for eachseason. A strong understanding of lighting, composition, and framing and anability to clearly articulate needs to various freelance and on-staff Art Directors & Photographers at Gap Studios is a must.

  • Skilled at bringing retail concepts to life visually through compelling photography, delivering on the strategic brief but also bringing innovation and new ideas that help the brand evolve.
  • Sophisticated understanding of the unique challenges of apparel photography.
  • Clearly communicates the creative vision for a shoot to relevant partners, senior leadership, and externally to production & talent.
  • Can command respect on set with confidence and a respectful approach.
  • Has an understanding of how to direct and put talent at ease.
  • Ability to collaborate closely with photographers, stylists, and digital techs.
  • Has experience with sport photography and has an understanding of how to capture authentic motion when needed, as well as a simple sophistication in the quiet moments.
  • Can easily manage multiple projects from concept through completion within a deadline driven environment.
  • Proven ability to pull the most compelling and versatile body of work for each shot, clearly communicating the intent behind each edit for the design team.
  • Understands how to deliver creative within a Brand framework, while also pushing new limits with experimentation.
  • Strong ability to build open, collaborative relationships with both internal and freelance creative and production teams.
  • A strong sense of curiosity and desire to learn.

    Seeks out feedback for improvement and is consistently pushing self to evolve.

  • Strong understanding of studio photography and how to capture assets that will work within the intended design context.
  • Excellent time management skills which will allow for balancing workload as well as creating a low stress, highly productive on-set environment.
  • Keeps current with industry trends, innovation within photography, while looking for inspiration in unexpected places.
  • Enthusiasm for and proven experience in apparel retail (sport/ performance brand experience is a plus).

  • 5 years of experience in a photography environment.

  • Ability to work with a diverse cross-functional team with strong influencing skills.

  • Software expertise in InDesign and Adobe CS5 as well as editing software.

  • Ability to conceptualize and storyboard ideas.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.

  • Strong aptitude in anticipating and following production processes and timelines.
