About the role

This is an exciting and pivotal time for Athleta eCommerce. The Sr Director, eCommerce Merchandising is responsible for developing, communicating, and driving seasonal and long-term product and business strategies that meet or exceed financial goals and customer expectations via our online channel. This role works with and requires effective communication with and presentation to all levels of the organization including the Brand President. This role requires successful partnership with multiple cross functional teams within Athleta and cross brand central support teams. This role reports to the VP/GM Online, Athleta.
Business/Financial

What you'll do

  • Drive online product strategy: Collaborate with omni merchandising to develop the appropriate omni and online exclusive product assortment considering customer needs and trends and the opportunity for online exclusives to drive the online business and support overall merchandising and product strategies and success. Drive customer experience and presentation of these strategies.
  • Partner with the commercial planning team to develop promotional plans.
  • Develop and ensure execution of online business strategies, merchandise messages, and seasonal assortments to drive business KPIs (including Demand, Conversion, AOV, Returns) and enhance the customer experience.
  • Ensure best in class product experience on the site, including inspirational merchandise presentation, simple and intuitive category navigation, clear and accurate product details and operational excellence and attention to detail.
  • In collaboration with omni Inventory Management partners, establish long-term strategies and annual and seasonal financial plans; identify and action growth opportunities within division.
  • Work both pre season and in-season to ensure all partners clear on ongoing channel objectives and performance, and what is needed to drive the business.
  • Provide input, insight and specific actionable recommendations to seasonal hindsight to inform category investments to ensure that smart risks are being taken, basic businesses are protected and financial targets are met. Ensure recommendations are actioned in next seasonal cycle.
  • Analyze sales and web/mobile performance metrics in season to Identify business opportunities and risks; provide appropriate and timely direction to omni business partners and team to react quickly to customer and business trends considering all business levers such as site changes, inventory management and marketing opportunities.
  • Maintain cost consciousness and strong awareness of profit.

Customer/Marketplace

  • Demonstrate deep knowledge of our customer, particularly the needs of our online customer; initiate and hindsight shared learnings with team and cross-functional partners regarding customer insight and behaviors.
  • Maintain strong awareness of competitive landscape from an omni and ecommerce perspective, and action tactics and recommendations to ensure we are leaders in our industry.
  • Act as the catalyst to create an environment which encourages innovation, extraordinary presentation, and “best in class” performance.

Leadership:

  • Motivate, inspire and supervise team of merchandisers, assistants and coordinators. Support employees in developing goals for themselves and provide them with the appropriate tools and training for their professional development. Evaluate, establish and optimize organizational structure of the team.
  • Train, motivate and coach the ecommerce merchandising team to be customer-focused, innovative, detail oriented, proactive, accurate, fast, team-oriented and empowered in their work. Act as a role model of these ways of working.
  • Prioritize workload for team to ensure massive productivity and results.
  • Act as a leader and role model and represent ecommerce merchandising across Athleta initiatives, priorities, and decisions.
  • Act as a brand liaison with ecommerce merchants across Gap Inc. Bringing best practices and key learnings to and learning from them.
  • Serve as a member of the Supercore team for Athleta.
  • Actively listen to all members of the cross-functional team to ensure innovative ideas are surfaced and actioned, and that the team feels ownership for the business.
  • Express a global perspective with authoritative voice with cross-functional teams as well as clear understanding of omni business decision impact when advocating for the online business.
  • Demonstrate smart risk-taking in investment strategies to significantly increase the business.
  • Serve as a brand steward, through both product assortment and site experience.
  • Build robust cross-brand and business relationships; share information where appropriate.
  • Demonstrate strong presentation and communication skills across all levels of the organization.
  • Support an open and inclusive environment recognizing employees based on the strength of their results.

Key Cross Functional Partnerships

  • IM to build and monitor balanced financial plans and identify future business opportunities.
  • Marketing and creative to ensure a compelling site and customer experience which supports overall business objectives, marketing vehicles and meets customer expectations; to advocate for tactics which drive sufficient qualified traffic to the site to meet business goals.
  • Online Production to ensure timelines, deliverables, and site capabilities are workable.
  • Product Management to drive overall site strategy with regard to product presentation, features and functionality, and ecommerce innovation.
  • Omni merchandising, brand production and tech services to ensure efficiency and accuracy as it relates to exclusive product, sizes and/or businesses.
  • Gap Inc counterparts to enable cross-brand collaboration, shared learnings and best practices, people development and overall ecommerce merchandising bench strength.

    • Possess strong presentation, listening, verbal and written communication skills.
    • Bachelor’s degree.
    • Experience as a Director or equivalent.
    • 2-5 years of retail buying/merchandising experience.
    • 7+ years of ecommerce experience; 10+ years preferred.
    • 7+ years of management experience required; 10+ years preferred.
