Gap Inc.

May 17, 2017

More than the clothes we create, Gap Inc. is defined by its people. Our dedicated, eclectic, passionate culture is driven by pros, with personality. Say hello, get to know us, and take a closer look at what (and who) we’re made of. Meet some of the many people who make Gap Inc. great. #WeAreGapInc

It’s rare we get to meet the people behind the camera lens — the ones who do so much invisible work in such visible mediums. But it’s those who spend most of their time behind the camera that usually have the most to offer in front it. And most of them will tell you that they prefer not being the point of focus (literally and figuratively), and Kelly Flanagan, Gap Inc. Video & Content Producer, is no exception. “Behind a lens is where I belong and there is nowhere else I’d rather be.”

But put her in front of said lens, and she is positively electric — though she’ll deny it up and down and sideways (see below: if you need any proof at all of her aforementioned electricity).

Though it’s no surprise for anyone who’s spent any amount of time with her. Her confidence is immediate, but not off-putting. She’ll look at you squarely and tell you exactly what she’s thinking, but still leave room for it to be a conversation. She’s inquisitive and fastidious, and has one of the widest and brightest smiles you’ll ever see. She speaks and thinks in visuals, and there is nothing clearer about her than her dogged pursuit of perfection in everything she does, which she’ll admit to reluctantly. “I wouldn’t call myself a perfectionist… I am organized, very particular, and do not enjoy chaos… Ok, I guess I would call myself a perfectionist.”

Learn more about the woman behind the lens as we flip the camera around and talk confetti photoshoots, how to wear an entirely black wardrobe, and Color Me Mine. Meet Kelly.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR GAP INC.?

I produce videos and capture images for Gap Inc.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Art, film, and travel. As passionate as I am about capturing moments — I think it’s important to know when to put the camera down. At a museum, meeting locals in a foreign country or dining with your husband — there are moments when it’s important to put the camera away and take in the experience.

STYLE PERSONALITY

Monochromatic minimalist.

GO-TO OUTFIT

You can’t be a camerawoman in heels. More often than not, I am sporting black denim and Nikes.

LAST PURCHASE

Plane tickets to Spain.

WHAT YOU’VE LEARNED FROM CUSTOMERS

We care about the same things. We appreciate great customer service, thoughtful design, and a convenient shopping experience.

FAVORITE GAP INC. MOMENT

Shooting the 2016 Pride campaign with rainbow confetti. We asked employees from the GEAR business resource group here at Gap Inc. to throw confetti and dance around in the studio and it was a riot. I still find confetti pieces in the studio. The other day I was wondering why my “A” key was so stiff on my keyboard — turns out a piece of confetti was under it. (My job is full of surprises.)

FIRST JOB

Color Me Mine. It’s one of those paint your own pottery places. I loved helping customers come up with ideas for their pieces but was not very graceful at carrying them to the kiln. I have always been a visual communicator. Whether I am pitching an idea at work or telling my nephew how much I love him on his birthday, I use visuals to express my thoughts.

EPIPHANY MOMENT

In college, my advisor told me “technical skills can be learned, but understanding how to think creatively is invaluable.” That resonated with me and helped me decide to pursue my Digital Art and Film degree.

ALWAYS PUTS YOU IN A GOOD MOOD

Traveling somewhere new. I have a long list of places I’d like to visit. At the top of my list right now is Japan and Iceland.

THEME SONG

“Got to Be Real” by Cheryl Lynn.

SOMETHING PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU

Despite my entirely black wardrobe, everything in my apartment is all white. It’s like living in a Swedish designed cloud!

WHAT MAKES YOU MOST EXCITED TO COME TO WORK IN THE MORNING?

The opportunity to pitch ideas, create compelling content, and help colleagues brainstorm visual projects.
